Speechless

Hi all,
I really have no one thing to blog about...and the blogs have been less frequent as my work at Salt gets more intense. I'm hardly on campus so I can't give you any specifics on what is going on there, just a general idea. And to top it off I have been sick for the past week and have lost my voice as of Sunday morning...fabulous I know. My parents are thrilled because they don't have to listen to me because I can't call them!!! It is however putting a damper on the interviewing process that is part of my coursework at Salt.

Anyway, the going-ons in the area are as follows...
Weather is outstanding...and unusual. Predicted highs for today are close to 80 and sunny. It feels like summer still.
It is deer season for the hunters, so deer are coming out of the woods as hunters go in. My parents have had a small gathering in the front yard every morning this past week.
Apple picking is still prime...so that means apples, apple pie, apple cobbler, apple crisp, apple muffins, baked apples, applesauce (just think Forest Gump but insert "apple" instead of "shrimp").
Halloween is about a week away so everyone is planning out their costumes and carving pumpkins. Locally there is the Scare-borough (Scarborough) Downs Haunted Hay Rides and corn mazes. I do know that at some point the cafe does host a pumpkin carving for all you residents. This Saturday is host to the Rave...as blogged about last year a dance party with all in costume. Probably the biggest even on campus all year. This weekend alone is host to sooooo many different things that it is hard to list. I won't be attending any because Thursday afternoon I'm leaving on a jet plane...going to DC to check out GWU for grad school and visit with my cousin and his girlfriend. I will be wearing my orange for halloween though as they are taking me to a Clemson game on Saturday.
Other than that, not really sure what else to report.
Well wait...I'll just leave you with one word. One thought...
COMMENTS!!!!
Thanks
Emma

Wild Horses

The University of New England plays a large role in the Biddeford community and stresses giving back to that community in many different ways. Just down the street from UNE, Mona Jerome runs non-profit Ever After Mustang Rescue, rehabilitating and training captured and abused wild horses. Since the business is non-profit, the work gets done thanks to Mona and many volunteers. Some of the volunteers are UNE students. Mona especially appreciates those students with backgrounds in working with horses and psycho-bio majors because the understand animal behavior, but she is willing to take in and train anyone willing to put in the work.

Here are some horse that Mona has in her stables. There are twenty wild horses and eight standard breeds. Her barn isn't top of the line, but her love for the animals is, and that's all that counts.

Maude patiently awaiting her turn to go out...

Amazing Grace and UNE student Linsey working together to develop Grace's trust with humans...

I have been familiar with Mona's work because I have grown up down the road, but I appreciate her work even more because I am currently documenting her as part of my semester's work at Salt. I could never do what she does, day in and out, not to mention she's 69!!! She is a passionate, dedicated animal lover for sure.

...oh and of course I will leave you with another pretty scene from the beach in front of my house after the downpours yesterday.
