Finding Balance...

In my third year of college, you think I would have time management mastered....

RIGHT...

I'm still not the best at scheduling my time according to what needs to get done. For example, while I have plenty of work to do for the coming week, I spent Thursday afternoon, Friday afternoon/evening/night/earyAM and Saturday enjoying the Halloween holiday festivities. Now, it is Sunday and all that work is just sitting there, but my bed is looking much more appeasing.

To nap or not to nap that is the question...

If I nap, that work will not do itself. If I don't nap, I will feel accomplished and probably be able to relax and go to bed early (which as a college student seems physically impossible).

It is all about balance. I could have done nothing the past three days socially, but that isn't fun. I would have all my work done, but come Monday there would be no stories to share. Of course I need my sleep too, but it will be more rewarding to get done what I have to and chill later on. My balance in life is completely lopsided this weekend and now I have to deal with it.

This is just another college lesson that isn't outlined in your classes syllabi...

Who says you have to go to Portland to have fun?

OK, I'm a little late on reporting my exciting weekend of Biddeford excursions. I was being lazy in getting the pictures off the camera and onto the computer...but hey, better late than never right?

So, after my long day Friday, I swung through campus to pick up my friend and we headed to downtown Biddeford. For those of you who haven't lived in Biddeford your entire life (like Amanda and I) you may always feel like you have to go to Portland to do anything cool and exciting, but this is not the case!
You just have to think outside the box a bit...and you'll have a great time.

Main Street Biddeford is host to a handful of really cool, unique restaurants. Such as Bebe's Burritos

A few other places include Thai Siam, The French Quarter, the Jewel of India, Loose Moose Cafe, Happy Dragon, and Union Coffee House....and excuse me if I forgot anything else.

My friend Amanda and I at Bebe's! We are STARVING...but jamming out to some great jazzzzz.

A lot of the local places will have musical entertainment on the weekend nights. Although its not like heading to the Civic Center to see Barenaked Ladies, it is still awesome. Friday's music at Bebe's was a jam session featuring jazz vocalist Chris Humphrey Mexican food may not necessarily scream jazz music, but hey it works.

We had another hour after we finished dinner before Amanda's friend Kate rolled in on the AmTrak, so we headed down the street to the Loose Moose Cafe. There we had some hot coffee and sweet desert while listening to another musician. Loose Moose is a neat new place and is supporting our bad habit of coffee and sweets...but on Tuesdays they offer 1/2 all appetizers for UNE students! So we like to support them anyway.

After picking up Kate, I headed home because Saturday was a big day for me!
UNE Friends and Family weekend had arrived and UNE always has a craft fair during the day on Saturday. It is free to all faculty and staff who would like to display and sell their wears. This summer, I started making tote bags and decided to participate in this year's fair.

It was a great turn out of friends and family! I saw tons of people walking through the Campus Center lobby checking things out and supporting the artist. I was able to sell 3 totes, and the more I talk about them, the more people are wanting them!

That night for Friends and Family Weekend, Activities Programming Board was host to a Casino Night in the Campus Center. As fun as that sounds, I had a different agenda. In a brief history of Biddeford, I can tell you it was once a mill town, and now there is just a bunch of abandoned mill buildings between the cities of Biddeford and Saco. Well, there is one man who has proposed an idea to make use of those buildings. Saturday night, he and a group of citizens organized Milling About Again. It was to promote his idea as well as celebrate all the artists and businesses in the area. Local restaurants were there serving food, artists had their work up for sale, the few retail stores in the mill currently were open for business and people were sharing their thoughts on the wall of poetry...

The turn out of people made me so excited and proud of my little city. With any hope, the proposal will be approved and this vision will help Biddeford grow back into the bustling down town it really once was. If it goes through the now empty buildings will be host to businesses, art studios, restaurants, fitness facilities, grocery store and housing. All within walking distance from everything you would ever need and the train that connects our world to Boston. It was great to see all the citizens that were turning out for the cause. And if I were a rich grown up, not a poor college student, I would have happily supported the artists by buying their work! (I just stole some of their ideas instead!)

Yeah, it was an exciting weekend...and that didn't even include Sunday.
But Sunday God created for homework, so that is what I did.

Stay tuned for more exciting adventures!!!

Let's Get Physical!

OK, so last week...was a bad week for me. Sorry my blog was ridiculously depressing.
I'm gonna try and make it up to you!

Now, piggy-backing on Amanda's entry about getting FAT in college, I'm going to share with you my exerience.
I did gain the "15" but it wasn't until my sophomore year, fall semester. By the time the holidays rolled around I was very unhappy with myself. Come New Years, I did what every one does, I made a New Years Resolution to diet and exercise. BUT I actually stuck with it. I have lost the "15" plus another 30 since then!

How did I do this you ask?
Well, it was a diet adjustment for sure, but my access to the Campus Center Fitness Center has really helped out. Having a gym SO accessable makes going a lot easier! Plus, there is great equiptment. Elipticals, treadmills, steppers, bikes, recumbant bikes, and row machines....a ton of free weights and the full circuit of stationary weight machines.

Don't know what to do at the gym? No problem, because at UNE there are students going to school to be fitness instructors. A few students work in the Fitness Center to help students get the most out of their workouts. There are set times that you can either drop in or make an appointment to get their advice and guidance. And guess what, IT IS FREE!

Do you get bored on the stationary cardio equiptment? Who doesn't right?
Well, my new found Fitness Center fav is the Cardio Club that offers cardio classes to students taught by student instructors. Especially the Kickboxing class. I can go Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4 and get a great work out while having fun with a group of people. As an extra bonus, Val, our instructor, incorporates self defense by indicating what area of the body we would be targeting when we throw our punches and our kicks...you're not gonna want to meet any of us in a dark alley!

Me getting ready to do a jab, cross punch into the pads that Val bravely holds!

Other girls from the class enjoying their new found moves.

Other classes that the Cardio Club offer include ballet, hip hop and yoga.

The classes are fun and offer a shake up to any old work out. Oh...and these are FREE too! (Well except the yoga, because that is a professional instructor. But it is ONLY $10 for the session. Super cheap!) If you are concerned about your physical fitness as you head off to college, this is definately something to pay attention to and get involved with right away!

Allergies or a Cold?

Yep, I've already contracted my first cold of the year. Joy...

I was trying hard to convince myself yesterday it was just allergies, but this morning definately told me different. Unfortunately, classes are getting busier because...it is ALREADY October!!! Therefore, missing a class is not that easy to do.

A word to everyone still in High School...

As I reflect on the colds I had during High School, I remember taking a day off was easy peasy. Your parents call in to say you won't be in school and you assume your position on the couch with a bottle of gingerale and you find the channel of TGIF reruns (yes, I watched Boy Meets World and Sabrina!!!).

But today, with a quick glance at my course syllabi, I realized missing classes this week, impossible! Not to mention that I have 2 papers due on Thursday and a test next week. Missing classes would be surely academic death. (Well that is exageration...I would just be lagging behind. I don't like being behind.)

OK, so I take a nice hot shower and chug down some OJ, and truck off to class. My plan is to go, suffer through it, come back and sleep it off. HA, I got back home and all I could think about is the reading to do and the papers to write.

I don't want to scare you, but you just need to pay attention to your health.

Stock up on some Air Born...cause my mom the nurse swears by it. Eat healthy foods. Include lots of vitamin C. Wear the appropriate clothes when it starts cooling off (cause even though it looks like summer out your window, it is officially fall)....last but not least, run from any one who shows signs of sickness. Doing homework and going to class just isn't fun when you're sick.

So now that I've whined to all of you, I'm off to bed in hopes of feeling amazing tomorrow!!!
