Thanksgiving and Clinical
Hey everyone! Well we just celebrated our Thanksgiving here at UNE WCC. It was very nice and my whole human development class had our own table at dinner. There was turkey, mashed potatoes, squash, peas, carrots and that was just the main corse!
Besides Thanksgiving at the cafeteria there have been other things that have happened this week. For starters I finished my clinical at Maine Med. I can’t believe I’ve already finished clinical this semester. It seems like we just started. We had a small clinical party to show appreciation to the staff and nurses we worked with. A lot of what we learn about nursing happens outside the classroom and the nurses we work with teach us so much.
Just as we are finishing up our clinical hours now we will be starting our preceptors. For nursing students preceptor is another out-of-class experience. From November 26th to December 13th we work a unit of a hospital with our own personal nurse to teach us and guide us into becoming a ‘real’ nurse. What is nice about preceptor is we (the students) get the chance to choose the hospital we want to work in and possibly the unit we have an interest in. For me I choose Miles Memorial hospital in Damariscotta. Its close to where I live and I hope to work there some day. Some of the hospitals other students will be working in are Maine Med, Mercy, Central Maine, Frisbie (in NH), etc. Some students will be working in the emergency room, SCU, ICU, day surgery, and med surg. It’s very exciting and I can’t wait to start! I’ll definitely keep you all up to date with all the things that happen to me at preceptor.
Another thing that I have been working on is my clinical grand rounds presentation. Our grand round is about a specific interesting patient we worked with. We present information about our patient to our classmates. We tell them things like the patient’s background, illness manifestations, pathology of their illness, lab values, and the patient’s discharge plans. Our clinical group has worked very hard on making our presentation perfect. I’ll also fill you guys in more next week after our presentation.
