Time Flys

Hey all! Well the end of the semester is upon us all here at good ol’ WCC.

Last week was pretty hectic. Particularly Monday through Wednesday, as we lost power and heat during that horrible storm. Looking back I never before wanted to go online so badly than those last few days. By Tuesday morning almost everyone on campus, including myself, went home or to somewhere else that had power and hot water. Thankfully everything turned out all right and classes resumed by Thursday.

I can’t believe my first year is almost over. Looking back now I have some advice:

1. The first two months seem like the longest months of your life, mainly October. I remember looking at my calendar going “What! Its only October 11th! When does this month end???” I probably felt this way because I was getting used to my classes and schedule. But by Thanksgiving the time seems to fly by.

2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. I know in high school when things where difficult in a class you could just meet up with your teacher before class started and get help in your subject. Not so in college. At UNE there is a wealth of resources to be found in the tutoring department. At WCC there are tutors for every subject. When I first came to college I was afraid my writing would be a little weak and not “college worthy,” so before my paper was due I would meet up with a tutor and she would look at my paper and teach me some of my writing mistakes and how to correct them.

3. Have good time management skills. In college your teachers aren’t there to remind you the due date is approaching and your parents aren’t asking you if you did all your homework. Nope. When you go to class on your first day you are given a syllabus and on it are assignment descriptions and when they are due. That’s it. It’s up to you when you decide to write a paper and it’s up to you to make the time. Manage your time carefully and you have nothing to worry about at 3am in the morning.

4. Make it a priority to stay healthy. In high school there are sport teams where everyone is invited to join and extracurricular events to keep you moving. However, in college you motivation to go out and get sweaty and run is outweighed by the temptation to take a 30 minute nap before class. Exercising can actually make a person more energized than a nap. Make it a priority to get your blood pumping at least 3 times a week. You’ll soon see it will be a promise you can easily keep.

I hope this helps. Well it’s about time I go back to studying Nursing, got an exam this Friday and then FINALS!!!
