EA Invited Students - More Updates

For our Early Action invited students:

*If you're interested in chatting with others who were accepted EA to PC, there's a Providence Class of 2013 Facebook group out there that's worth checking out! (Started and run by your potential future classmates!) Search Facebook for Providence College '13 to find it.

*We hope to see you all at PC Up Close, an on-campus program for all students invited to PC Early Action. You'll be receiving your invitation shortly (if you haven't already!) for this February event.

*Need-based financial aid information will be mailed on or around February 1st.

Is there a separate visiting day for those invited to Liberal Arts Honors?

I was just wondering how many people got accepted EA and how many people got deferred? I was one of those who was deferred and am disappointed; is there any way that I can improve my chances of regular admission?

Thanks, Lauren

To Chas,

Yes. Students invited into the Liberal Arts Honors Program will receive an invitation to a recognition dinner on campus that will take place in April. More information on this event will be available after decision letters are released to the students who applied Regular Decision.

To Lauren,

Of the nearly 3,500 students who applied Early Action, a little more than 1,900 were invited, 845 were deferred, and about 640 were denied (and the remainder of the applications were either incomplete or withdrawn before decision letters were released).

The most important thing you can do as a deferred student to help your chances in the Regular Decision pool is to have a strong first semester performance. Senior grades are the most important factor for students who have been deferred. Also, if you have any additional information that you'd like to share with us that wasn't included in your application, please feel free to pass that along as well (additional activities, an award or honor you've received, etc.). Finally, some students will send along an additional statement or letter, providing a detailed explanation of why they feel PC is the right fit for them (and often expanding on their original PC Supplemental statement) - this never hurts!

Of course, we are considering the students we have deferred in the context of the Regular Decision applicant pool - to some extent, therefore, a deferred student's place will depend on what the applicant pool looks like. For example, is the Regular pool smaller or generally weaker than expected? In this case, deferred students may look very strong in comparison. On the other hand, is the Regular pool larger or stronger than we expected? In this case, deferred students may look weaker in comparison. Obviously, this is out of your control, and the most important thing for you to do is to continue to perform in the classroom in a challenging curriculum. I wish you the best of luck.

I was deferred from EA and was wondering how many additional students will be accepted in the Regular Decision group?

Thank you, Felicia

To Felicia,

In a typical year at PC, about 1 in 4 of the students we invite will choose to enroll in our freshman class. This year, we are looking for a class of a little more than 1,000 students, so we will likely end up inviting over 4,000 students total. The number will depend on what our overall applicant pool looks like, but I would guess that at Regular Decision, we'll invite around 2,300 students or so this year. As we move through the review process, we'll have a better sense of the exact number.

Have all the invitations for Honors / Merit scholarships been sent out?

When will the PC Up Close be? We haven't received anything yet in the mail...and how will this be different than the April 18th day?

To Maria:

Yes. All Early Action Liberal Arts Honors Program invitations were mailed on December 23.

To Sue:

PC Up Close will take place on Saturday, February 14th, and will give all students invited Early Action the opportunity to take a closer look at academic and extracurricular life at Providence.

During PC Up Close, students and their parents will have the opportunity to hear from various speakers, take a campus tour, and attend panels covering a variety of academic and student life topics. Faculty and staff members from many departments will be on hand to answer questions, and current PC students will also share their experiences. The day will conclude with dinner on campus and the opportunity to attend our men's basketball game against Rutgers University at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Downtown Providence.

PC Up Close is a smaller event than our Family Day in April (since Family Day includes ALL invited students, both from Early Action and Regular Decision). Both events give our invited students the chance to hear from and speak with faculty and students from academic departments across campus, although there will be more department representatives at the larger Family Day Event. Since the basketball season concludes in March, the main program difference is the opportunity to see the Friars in action at PC Up Close. Invited EA students will receive their invitations to the February event shortly.

Scott,

Thank you for your insightful updates during the process. My son was admitted to Providence early action and both he and I have liked reading your blog during the last few months. We both do look forward to visiting on the accepted students days that are coming up.
