pleasure reading

So it turns out that I actually do enjoy reading books. Sometimes I forget that I enjoy this aspect of life - often it's forgotten during school. I know that every summer break in college I would just dig into the pleasure reading out there. You know what I'm talking about, the really crappy stuff out there.

Well, I don't get a break really ever. I mean, a week here and there gives me enough motivation to purchase books, but never to finish them. I have a compulsion to be with people, to a fault sometimes.

So in the past 18 hours, I've slept 12 of them (yay!) and read 3 of them. That's a beautiful thing.

Good books on the docket for now:
- I'm eating up Brennan Manning again. This time it's The Wisdom of Tenderness.
- Dorothy Sayer's Letters to a Diminished Church
- Merold Westphal's Overcoming Ontotheology: Toward a Postmodern Christian Faith

Ok, I'll admit it now. The third book is not a pleasure read, it's certainly a class read. The first two will be done before I tackle that one. But I have assigned chapters due in a month!

Off to beach and friends... I love "breaks."

when it's all been said and done

I've decided I've got to learn how to say no. Honestly, I've known of this problem for years. But the other night, a conversation illuminated me into just how direly I need this. See example.

Friend 1: We need someone to put together thank you bags.
Friend 2: Well who are you thinking about
Friend 3: I can't, I'm sorry.
Libby: Not it!
Friend 2: Well, what are you thinking. There are other people.
Friend 1: I trust everyone in this circle.
Libby: I mean, I guess I could.
Friend 2: Tell me you can't.
Libby: Ok. No.
Friend 1: Are you sure?
Friend 2: Look me in the eye and say "no"
Libby: No.
Friend 2: You're not looking.
Libby: No, No, No, No, No.
Friend 2: Good job.
Friend 1: Well now who's gonna do it?

...20 minutes later...

Libby: If you can't get anyone else, let me know. I can pull something together by Friday.
Friend 1: Ok, thanks!

...3 hours later...

Libby: I don't have any time!!!!!!!!!!!

Right. I have a problem. And I'm not kidding when I say this. I think a lot of people have it. And unfortunately, a lot of us are going into ministry. The majority of us are actually. It's called the savior complex.

I wonder when I'll really learn I can't do it all. Oh, right. It's this quarter. When I don't get it all done.

it's gonna be a long week, folks. I'll talk to you post-graduation. In the meantime, here's a question: Do you really know what a savior complex is? Do you struggle with one yourself? What is your vice in ministry, life, etc.?
