Janey Hair

For first-year student Janey Hair, Champlain's BYOBiz program was the big draw.

Champlain's unique program for young entrepreneurs allowed Janey to "bring her own business" all the way from her hometown of Tampa, Florida.

"I was frustrated with make-up that was too expensive or too grown-up," says Janey. So she founded her own company, Rosey Pink Cosmetics, at age 15.

While run as a family business, Janey serves as Chief Executive Officer, or CEO. Everyday she handles big decisions like products, packaging and colors — all while living the life of a typical college freshman.

But Janey is anything but typical. She's traveled throughout Europe and the Caribbean and plans to spend a semester in London.

What attracted Janey to Champlain? "I really wanted a smaller school, with smaller classes. Along with the BYOBiz program, the upside-down curriculum was really appealing to me."

Although she's a successful businesswoman, Janey isn't all business. She can often be found hanging out in Champlain's residential "houses" or shopping in downtown Burlington.

This native Floridian is also looking forward to winter in Vermont — so she can take up snowboarding;)

Though she's only a freshman, Janey already has a good handle on what it takes to succeed at Champlain. "The ideal student here should have good time management skills, be willing to get involved and really take advantage of the close community and closeness with the teachers."

Having recently gone through the college search process, Janey wisely advises: "Don't do anything just because you feel someone else thinks it's best for you. Go where you want to go; where you think you will get the most out of your college experience."

Whether it's on-campus or in the boardroom, Janey is already proving she can go anywhere she wants.
